An ordinary interior home door provides more protection in a fire than you might think. Plan A in a home fire should always be to get outside as quickly as possible. But if your way is blocked and you’re in a room that isn’t on fire, then closing the door may be your best Plan B.

Closing the door could save your life. A closed door can reduce the temperature in your room by as much as 900 degrees, and helps keep smoke and other toxic gasses out of the room. This means the fire department has more time to get you to safety.

Earlier this week, the Rose Tree Fire Company’s crew practiced the fundamentals of low angle rescue. A rescue is considered “low angle” if it’s made on a modestly steep incline, where the ground still supports the patient’s weight. Ropes are an integral part of low angle rescues: they help secure the patient, provide a safety line to prevent the patient and crew from sliding down the incline, and can be used in a hauling system to help get the patient back to safety.

Skills like these are put into use more often than you might think. It’s not uncommon for RTFC to be called to the scene of an accident where a passenger slid down an embankment and needs to be safely carried back to the road, or to a medical emergency where EMTs need help moving an immobile patient. In those moments, skills like the ones RTFC drilled this week are critical.

Last night, the Rose Tree Fire Company helped Media Fire Hook and Ladder #1 - Station 23 pull a driver from his overturned car. RTFC arrived on scene to find a four door sedan on its side, with the driver conscious but trapped inside. RTFC’s crew quickly went to work stabilizing the car so that it wouldn’t inadvertently fall onto its roof, while another member of the crew cut out the windshield. In less than ten minutes the driver was out and on his feet.
